Our Recommended Places to See and Visit in Germany

In over 13 years that we have lived and traveled in Germany and nearby countries and cities, here's our list to get you started on a European adventure. This is arranged alphabetically, however when we took our trips, we group them together by proximity to each other so we could see more places during our vacation/leave. Our favorite district is Bavaria, it's friendly so so romantic, and beautiful. Plan your trip, get up and go, and enjoy!

Aschaffenburg

Aschaffenburg is a friendly German town situated on both sides of the Rhine River, located 25 miles southeast of Frankfurt. See Schloss Johannisburg, Schonbusch Park, and dine local.

Augsburg

Augsburg is the second oldest city in Germany, after Trier. University of Augsburg is located here. See cathedrals and old town.

Baden Baden

Baden Baden is a town located in Baden-Wurttenburg on the foothills of the Black Forest range. Its mineral springs are well known since the Romans. Enjoy a relaxing walk and hang out at scenic parks.
Visit the Kurhaus, The Casino, Caracalla Spa, Stiftkirche, and the Paradise garden.

Bertesgaden OberSalzberg

Berchtesgaden is one of the best known tourist towns and one of the most popular climatic resorts in the Bavarian Alps. It is surrounded by mountains, the Hoher Göll, Watzmann, Hochkalter and Untersberg. The surrounding scenic beauty is breathtaking. Visit the Nationalpark Berchtesgaden, Obersalzberg bunker system, Konigsee (breathtaking emerald lake) or take a tour of the salt mines and the Eagle's Nest, Mt Kehlstein (May - Oct).

Bonn

Bonn is located along the river Rhine and was once the seat of the German government before it was moved to Berlin. There are many scenic buildings in the city and nearby towns to include old castles. See the Beethoven Monument and the market square. Also visit Bad Godesburg.

Cologne (Koln)

Cologne is the fourth largest city in Germany and the location of the famous cathedral Kolner Dom. It's located along the Rhine River near Bonn in North Rhine-Westphalia. It's major cultural center in Germany. See many famous landmarks and enjoy the scenery along the Rhine River.

Ettal Abbey

Ettal Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in the village of Ettal near Oberammergau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria, Germany. Stop by to see and take some photos/videos.

Fussen

Fussen is a town in Bavaria, Germany. It is called the Romantic Soul of Bavaria. The famous castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau are located near Fussen. Spend time and picnic at the Lake Forggensee. See the beautiful castles. Make sure you take photos and videos.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is Germany's largest Alpine resor and a favorite holiday spot for skiing, snowboarding, and hiking. It has some of the best skiing areas in Germany. It was the site of the 1936 Winter Olympics Games. If you like winter sports, this is the place. During Spring and Summer, the climate is very nice. Take a stroll around town. For military member and dependents, an Armed Forces Recreation Center is located here and good jumping point to nearby towns and cities in Austria.

Hamburg

Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany located in Northern Germany. It is also the second largest seaport in Europe. Enjoy the city. See the port, buy fish and seafoods.

Heidelberg

Heidelberg was the center of the epoch of "Romantik" (Romanticism) in Germany. Cruise along the river for a memorable experience. See the Heidelberg castle, old cathedrals, university, and bridges, and gardens. Take a romantic boat cruise. NOTE: Heidelberg is home to many US military installations. The city has may traffic enforcement cameras (speed and stop light cameras) strategically located. Be careful if you're driving. For Filipino tourists, there is the Jose Rizal park and monument at nearby Wilhelmsfeld, the sister city of Calamba, Philippines.

Linderhof Palace

Linderhof Palace (Schloss Linderhof) is a palace in Germany, near Oberammergau in southwest Bavaria. The gardens surrounding Linderhof Palace are very beautiful and scenic. You can spend almost a whole day touring this Palace. You can dine locally or picnic on the park.

Lugwigsburg

Lugwigsburg is a beautiful city located 7 miles north of Stuttgar near the Neckar river. Visit this city to see nice palaces (schloss) and gardens. Be sure to stop by before you head to Stuttgart.

Mannheim

Mannheim is a city near the Rhine and Neckar rivers. Several US military installations are located here. Luisenpark and Wasserturm are some of the tourist attractions. Go shopping or dining in the city.

Munich

Munich is the capital city of Bavaria and the third largest city in Germany. It's the location of the world-famous "Oktoberfest" and BMW Headquarters. So many sights to see--gardens, palaces, stadiums, museums--either driving or walking. Nearby is Lake Chiemsee and the Herrenchiemsee Palace, a replica of the Versailles Palace. If you care to see a concentration camp, visit nearby Dachau.

Rothenburg is a well-preserved medieval town. Go back in time and feel what is like during medieval times. Visit the market square and the city walls. Go shopping.

Rudesheim

Rudesheim is a romantic town located along the heart of the Rhine River at the southern entrance to Lorelei Valley. Enjoy local dining, riverboat cruise, take a walk and go shopping for souveneirs. Nearby is the scenic city of Koblenz. There, visit the Deutsches Eck monument, Koblenz Cathedral, Fortress Ehrenbreitsten, and the city center.

Stuttgart is the capital city of Baden-Wurttenberg. Visit several castles and palaces parks and lakes, and the Mercedes-Benz Museum. Spend time at the city. Go to the annual Volksfest, Spring and Summer Festivals, Christmas Market. Porsche Headquarters is in Zuffenhausen, a city district of Stuttgart.

Swarzwald (Black Forest)

Black Forest is located in southwester Germany in Baden-Wurttenberg. Home of the 1001 Cuckoo Clocks. It's a famous place to buy cuckoo clocks, wooden carvings and souvenirs. Located nearby are some of most scenic beauties you can see. Swing by the beautiful lake Titisee and spa town Titisee-Neustadt; go boating, swimming, or picnic.

Trier

Trier is the oldest city in Germany located along the banks of the Moselle River. It is near the border of Luxembourg. Visit Porta Nigra (Black Port), the best preserved Roman city gate north of the Alps and old castles.

Wiesbaden

Wiesbaden is the home of the world's biggest cuckoo clock. Spend time at the parks, have a picnic. Visit the Biebrich Palace and palace square, baths and spa, and the Marktkirche. There are military installations here.

Wurzburg

Wurzburg is located on the Main River, 75 miles southeast of Frankfurt. Go see the Fortress Marienberg, Wurzburg Residence palace, Cathedral and Kappele. Take pictures of the Old Main Bridge.
